Alder Academy
Providing opportunities to use English on a daily basis
Alder Academy is a new Online English School that teaches daily “mini-lessons” to adults and children that have busy schedules.
We believe that the average ‘1 lesson a week’ other language schools offer is not nearly enough to become proficient at English. We focus on 30 minute lessons up to 5 times a week to increase student output and overall English time. All our lessons are taught by certified native English instructors.
Alder Academy was founded in 2024 by the head instructor, Joel Deroon. Joel has been teaching English all over Japan since 2015, but one thing he realized nearly all Japanese students struggled with was having a natural conversation in English. Even advanced level students had little confidence in their ability to communicate their opinions in a conversation with a native English speaker.

1. Japanese schools teach English as a tool, not as a language.
The focus being on translation, memorization, and tests, rather than self-expression, understanding and communication.
2. English conversation schools are not sufficient.
Most conversation schools average one 50minute lesson every week for 48 weeks of the year. This equates to 40hours of English a year. Over 10 years, the student will have about 1-month of English time built up (16 days if you don't sleep). This is not nearly enough to become proficient at English.
3. No time abroad experiencing the culture.
Finally, many students have never travelled abroad to study and use English. Of course, many students travel, but they tend to go with Japanese friends and speak mostly Japanese while they are in an English speaking country. The Japanese students that do study abroad have a massive advantage over other students. Not only does the English language become real (not just a subject), but they can also immerse themselves in the culture and become motivated and curious to continue pursuing English in their free time.
